Gerda Dendooven is an illustrator and author of children’s books. She won several prizes in Belgium and abroad: the ‘Zilveren Griffel’ for Dom Konijn (Stupid Bunny) by Edward van de Vendel, ‘Boekenpauwen’ for Het verhaal van Slimme Krol (The Story of Slimme Krol) and for Meneer papier gaat wandelen (Mister Paper goes for a Walk) by Elvis Peeters, the ‘Gouden Uil’ for children’s literature for Luna van de Boom (Luna from the Tree) with Filip Bral and Bart Moeyaert, and the ‘Cultuurprijs’ 2004 for Mijn mama (My Mom). The ‘Stichting Lezen’ appointed Gerda Dendooven in 2007 as the first Children’s Consul. The Children’s Consul always stands up for children and stimulates the debate about literature, culture and the relationship between adults and children.
