City Books

As a writer, Stefan Hertmans (Gent, Belgium, 1951) has an extensive body of work to his name comprising novels,  essays, poetry as well as plays for the theatre. He has given readings in such cities as Washington, Paris, Vienna, Adelaide, Mexico City, Berlin and Medellin. His works have also been nominated for the Libris Prize, the AKO prize and the VSB prize and been awarded among others with the Multatuli prize, the Bordewijk prize and the Ark prize of the Vrije Woord. In 1995 he received the Flemish Community Prize for Poetry. His work is published by De Bezige Bij. Hertmans caught the public’s eye with his novel, Naar Merelbeke (1994) and he made further inroads into Europe with his book Steden, Verhalen onderweg (1998). The book has been translated and published in Spain by Pre-Textos (Ciudades, Il Silencio de la Tragedia), by Reaktion Books London (Intercities), Christian Bourgois, Paris (Comme au premier jour), L'Arche, Paris (L'Ange de la métamorphose) and Le Castor Astral, Bordeaux (Entre Villes). Hertmans was involved with the Hogeschool Gent up until October 2010 as organiser of the Studium Generale, as well as working for Gent University as affiliated researcher art sciences.
In October 2011 a new collection of essays will be published, De Mobilisatie van Arcadia (De Bezige Bij, Amsterdam).
